This Month's Prayer Focus

Prayer for the safety and wellbeing of the Supreme Court justices, clerks, and staff, and their families. Prayer also for courage and resolve for the justices to issue a final decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey

This Month's Prayer Focus
Background

On May 2, it was reported that a version of the Supreme Court’s draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization had been leaked to the press. According to the reports, an unprecedented leak at the Court revealed that at least five justices were poised to overturn Roe v. Wade and send the question of abortion back to the states and Congress.

The reaction to the leak was swift and strident. An hour after the leak, thousands of angry protestors descended on the Court. In the two weeks since this initial protest, hundreds of demonstrations have been held across the country, pro-life organizations have been vandalized, dozens of churches have been threatened, and worship services have been disrupted.

Additionally, since the leak, abortion supporters have protested outside the private residences of Supreme Court justices. In response to these demonstrations, the governors of Maryland and Virginia wrote a joint letter to the Department of Justice urging the federal government to provide additional security resources. Moreover, the United States Senate unanimously passed a bill on May 9 to provide security to the immediate family members of Supreme Court justices (the bill is pending before the House).

Unfortunately, many of the demonstrations and protests around the country have been violent, and given the heightened security risks to the justices, clerks, staff, and their families, we need to pray for their safety. As Christians, we know that evil is real, and we must commit to praying for justice and righteousness to prevail.

Key Points

Courage is needed

Abortion is one of the most contentious issues in America. It should come as no surprise that people have responded strongly to the possibility that Roe and Casey may be overturned. As Christians observing the unfolding events, we must pray that the justices will not be influenced by the outside pressure or public scrutiny. We must pray that they have courage and resolve to stay the course and overturn Roe. Evidently, based on the leaked draft opinion written by Justice Alito, there were at least five justices in February ready to overturn Roe and Casey. Pray for resolve among the justices in the majority.
